Thursday, October 16th, 2008    Subscribe To Our FeedFor the many millions of people worldwide who suffer with acne, the fact that it is the most common of all skin complaints is no consolation and it is not solely a condition suffered by young people. Although not confined to teenagers, it is usually at this point in their lives when it is more likely to show and the figures indicate that as many as 9 out of 10 people will have acne at some time during their life.
Acne is the result of clogged hair follicles, caused by the overproduction of sebum, which is from the sebaceous glands but oil alone doesn’t clog pores nor does oily skin necessarily equal acne. It is this oil which is trapped inside the pores which creates the recognizable pimple but this seems to be a more modern condition amongst the population.
Among the many causes of clogged pores are the use of makeup, everyday air particles and often a simple case of hormonal changes but while acne is a part of life for many individuals, it can be effectively treated. Other factors can be responsible to, like the consumption of too much junk and reprocessed food, which is high in unhealthy sugars.
More persistent cases of acne will probably need stronger medication which can be prescribed by a dermatologist. Once a dermatologist has been consulted then he will check on the effectiveness of the medication on a regular basis and monitor to see whether other treatment is necessary. The person suffering with acne must remember not to scratch at or attempt to remove and pimples as any bacteria carried beneath the nails could cause further infection.
Germs and bacteria are not normally seen by the naked eye so just because the fingernails look clean does not actually mean they are. Therefore any contact between an acne sufferer’s hands and affected areas should be avoided if possible.
With ninety percent of people having acne at some stage in their life it is easy to see people with perfect skin are rare and current studies are now indicating that acne may well be hereditary. In the vast majority of acne cases though, it is caused by the transition from a child to an adult and the changes that take place during this period.
While opinions vary on the subject, it cannot hurt to contact a dermatologist if you are having a problem with acne or other skin complaint. If you are unsure about you own situation then contact your local dermatologist of family physician as the information provided here is for guidance only and not a replacement for the opinion of a medical professional.
