Fosamax Information
Monday, January 16th, 2012    Subscribe To Our FeedThe potentially dangerous, long-term side effects of the biphosphonate Fosamax have been published in many studies. Treatment of osteoporosis must have been the role of this drug but things seem to take a different turn. As was shown in these studies, women who are 68 or older and have taken Fosamax for over five years have about a three-percent chance of suffering from a femoral shaft fracture than those who used the drugs for fewer than 100 days. Interestingly, Fosamax risks are not seen on other biphosphonate drugs.
Fosamax has been a very popular seller for its distributor, Merck & Co. According to sales figures compiled since its introduction to the public, Fosamax has had a steady prescription rate of around 1.5 million per year. Sales striking billions in US dollars might have resulted from these prescriptions.
Merck was accused by many patients of failing to provide enough warning labels on their product. People were not informed about the potential side effects of the drug, published reports say. As regard bone death and several other allegations, there have been at least 100 different cases filed against Merck. These cases were filed since 2006 in a multidistrict litigation venue in the U.S. District Court for the District of New Jersey. A decision was already made on one bellwether trial. Femur fracture complaints have been purposely separated from those of jaw bone death since the claims have been deemed too different from the others.
These claims may have originated from insufficient warning labels on the product. If only the information about the side effects of Fosamax were available, many affected users have said that they would have never used the drug. However, a Fosamax lawsuit has already been filed because many people have already suffered a Fosamax femur fracture. This lawsuit will ensure that the ones responsible for the sufferings they have gone through will compensate them fairly for the damage.
