The term Onychomycosis might be an unfamiliar word but it is estimated that at least 10% of the world population is afflicted with this. Onychomycosis is the medical term for toenail fungus. This affliction is unpleasant because it infects the keratin found on the human nails. Infected nails then become either brown or yellow in color. Long ago, the treatment of toenail fungus was very hard to achieve. However, with the introduction of Long Island pinpoint laser treatment methods, this process is a lot easier. Long Island toenail fungus laser treatment is widely accepted and used amongst physicians; this is because the process is not painful and extremely effective. However, the laser toenail fungus treatment is only employed when an infection has occurred. People are therefore encouraged to prevent these infections from beginning at all.
The following are some of the ways by which these infections can be prevented
o Don’t wear humid or sweaty shoes or socks: In order for the pathogen to develop, the environment has to be warm or moist. Wearing dry shoes and socks will prevent this. People who exercise regularly is encouraged to remove their shoes and socks immediately after they are done.
o Use foot powder: A little foot powder will go a long way in keeping the feet and toes of people dry. Applying foot powder helps in absorbing most of the sweat that occurs on the feet.

o Do not use the same your nail clippers with people: Sharing clippers with other people will greatly increase the possibility of the individual experiencing a foot infection. {Every now and then the pathogens responsible for foot infections are carried alongside the blade ends. As a result of this, people who visit nail salon that use unclean and unsterilized tools can also suffer from foot infections. The risk of an individual suffering an infection is also more likely if there is an injury or abrasion on his/her feet. Statistics show that, males are found to be more likely to develop an infection.

o Putting on foot clothing which allow your feet to breathe: Damp feet are triggered by warm conditions. With the investments in apparels (e.g. socks) which are made of fabrics that allow easier flow of air such as cotton, people are able to reduce these conditions. People are also advised to take care of their feet by washing and drying them properly whenever they are moist.

o Refrain from keeping your nails long: People who keep their nails long are prone to developing infections. This occurs because untrimmed nails can get easily bent when a person’s feet is hit against something hard. When a nail gets damaged, the exposed nail bed increases the possibility of infections growing beneath it. Keeping short and trimmed nails will prevent this.
These are just some of the effective ways through which infections can be prevented. In the event that people do develop infections or feel pain, it is vital that they seek the attention of a physician or dermatologist immediately. Doing this will prevent the infections from getting worse. The earlier they are treated, the better.
