As part of the first manned space flights during the Skylab operations during the seventies the astronauts who were sent into earth orbit were accompanied by modern dental equipment. Manned space travel during the Skylab missions brought military dentists at the National Aeronautics and Space Administration or NASA to create a dental component for the in flight medical support system or IMSS. Three man crews were sent into space from 28 to 56 days during the Skylab program and on all of the three flights launched during this period modern dental equipment was utilized.

Probably the sole purpose of the dental equipment according to one of the military dentists at that time was to serve astronauts who may be experiencing ailments that could be treated on an outpatient basis. The equipment cannot and should not in any way be treated as if they were buddy kits or do it yourself kits. All ideas regarding the treatment concepts applied during the Skylab flights were founded on the one percent risk that dental attention might be required during the 28 days spent by the three man crews in space. Only serious dental problems are involved when the one percent dental risk is considered especially when problems such as pulpitis or periodontal abscess cause a crew member to be inefficient in his work. See this sydney orthodontist information for a deeper understanding.

For minor dental problems like chipped teeth and the like the risk is at five percent per trip. The dental equipment for the IMSS includes tooth removal forceps, elevator, local anesthetic with syringe, periodontal curette, restorative material applicator, file, battery powered light source with mirror, selvage gauze, Gigli saw, and temporary restorative material. It is not an easy thing to make the restoration material meet the specifications needed for it to be used in space but the Air Force den corps were able to develop the necessary material. The formulation allowed it to be mixed even with zero gravity.

In order to make sure that the equipment will indeed provide the necessary dental assistance for the astronauts much testing was done and to ensure that the crew knows how to properly use the equipment they were given intensive training sessions that went on for two days. Basically the purpose of conducting the training programs was for the flight crews to learn implementing different procedures not exceeding the skill level needed for tooth removal. Other than the training programs a manual will be provided for the space vehicle to serve as a guide for all crew members and this manual will have detailed instructions on procedures, information on diagnosis, and images sourced from personal radiographs illustrating each one’s oral structure.

For other dental needs the astronauts can rely on the dentist in mission control as he is always ready with oral casts, complete radiographs, and even a record of all space project related dental treatment as far as the sixties. The major requirement for any dental procedure to be done on a space vehicle is to have the approval of an on ground dental officer and so constant communication is necessary between the astronauts and ground control. As a person looking for clear braces sydney you should visit that site.

Although it seems as if they will need to gamble on the skills of the non dentists to safely perform dental procedures in space there is still much practicality in providing the necessary training and some people fail to consider this aspect. No one will sympathize with a crew member who experiences an agonizing ordeal due to dental pain when his ordeal becomes a threat to the success of the mission which can end up losing people millions of dollars. With much on the line the possibility of doing a dental procedure in space is reverted to the status of a backup plan.
