In July 1968, John B. Calhoun, an American research psychologist, once carry out a now notable study on the influence of open space on your brain. The experiment, of course, involved rats, not humans but his reports were broadly regarded to be a useful. Here is what he did.

He arrange 4 pairs of rats into a perfect universe. There’re no predators, no lack of food or drinks and obviously, no inadequate of breeding partner. Basically these mouse have everything they desire - with the exception of space.

At the beginning, everything looks just great. The mouse lived as they should be. Their population grow very quickly, multiplying around every fifty-five days. Very soon, when the population of the mouse reached 620, the area he was keeping them in became jam-packed. That was day 315 of the experiment. Surprisingly, the number of rats began to drop since then… to the point where the final surviving birth was at day 600. During this period of time, in between day 315 to day 600, the mouse behaved intermittently.

No longer do males protect their boundary and females. No longer do they engage in courtship or fighting. Rather they withdrew to be anti-social, and groomed themselves. As a result of their absence of scars and healthy coats, these number of males were called “the beautiful ones”.

The girls, on the other hand, became more and more aggressive, stopped giving birth and get rid of their immature before weaning was complete. After day 600, the population began to decrease into extinction.

Sound familiar? Needless to say, these mouse are really unhappy during this period of time. Did the lack of space and multiplying population density altering your psychology? Who knows? Perhaps so, maybe not. Although providing that you are similar me, you desire to find out.

Try this out: At least every week, walk to an open area. Be it a field or out of town. Most people feel relax, sort of a liberation when in open area. No mental exercises or brain training exercises can substitute this.
