However even though a panic attack can be really awful, there are steps to stop a panic attack. Even if you could not get rid of the attacks completely, wouldn’t it be nice to make the attacks less extreme. There are a variety of different things that can cause a panic attack. They could be caused by a traumatic experience that recently happened, to much stress, or even past issues that you haven’t resolved can trigger panic attacks. Panic attacks, for some people, could be a result of limited coping skills to deal with the stress of life. If a person is able to identify the root causes of the panic attacks, he/she usually has less attacks and is able to get back to their normal life. However, if the attacks are allowed to continue and no attempts are made to treat them, they can become increasingly worse until agoraphobia,the fear of leaving the house, sets in.

One of the first steps to stop a panic attack is to identify the triggers that are causing your anxiety. There are many different types of triggers, including a particular person, animal, situation, or issue that is not resolved. Once these triggers have been recognized, the next steps to stopping a panic attack can be used.
Most people who are looking to stop panic attacks have had more then one of them. With this in mind, they know what symptoms appear when an attack first starts. Being able to identify the initial symptoms, a you will be able to talk yourself through the attack. This will help you stay calmer throughout the attack. You can further help decrease the severity of the panic attack by using self talk. You do this by telling yourself that you have experienced panic attacks before and lived, thus you can do it again. You will also want to learn to take nice, slow, deep breaths. Breathing slowly from your diaphragm will allow you to calm your body.
There are many other preventative steps you can take when you feel a panic attack is starting or notice that you are already having a panic attack. Many of the people who suffer from panic attacks are hard on themselves for having them. They will blame themselves for the attacks and think there is something wrong with them.
It is important for panic attack sufferers to understand that the panic attacks are beyond their control. They also have to gain a better self-concept. It is important for sufferers to set realistic hopes for stopping their panic attacks, and decrease the frequency of attacks by limiting contact with the situations that cause them. Smoking, drinking alcohol, and caffeine should be eliminated or significantly reduced because they also can trigger panic attacks.
