Cleansing is a practice that dates back to ancient China, where the traditional fasting took place after the freezing cold winter. Those months of winter were full of people seeking warmth inside the home and staying cozy with their families. This meant for most Chinese a period of excessive eating and weight gain. Therefore, a full body cleanse took place at the end of winter to discard the extra pounds and so to return to a more active working life.

Other countries such as India practiced fasting as a tradition, although they had a more philosophical approach to it’s practice. Made part of the Hindu and Buddhist rituals, cleansing the body was not enough. They also made it just as important to clear the mind of thought through meditation and become one with all things to assist the soul on it’s journey. Peace was found this way and the practice of purification took on the three fold spiritual meaning.

In western countries weight loss is such a dire health issue the practice of fasting and detoxification is most importantly taken for the physical benefits. Losing weight, ridding the body of toxins and recapturing good physical fitness are the priorities. The spiritual nature of fasting is learned more through the disciplines of Eastern religions than the teachings of western culture or religion.

When using a fast to improve physical fitness, a look at the darker side of its practice is needed to avoid any harm being done instead of help. Dehydration can occur easily as the human body needs ample amounts of fluids to replenish itself while abstaining from solids. Also, excessive elimination of bile can leave someone with low levels of salt, both sodium and potassium. These need to be addressed to stay well during the fast.

One way of getting prepared to fast is to set goals to achieve which can become part of the dieting plan. Set the timing of the fasting period and have the right foods available for after. Including some spiritual practices such as meditation will help to keep the spirits up while the stomach is empty.

A slow entry into the fasting period and a planned return to eating is essential for success of the project. Solids such as cantaloupe, fresh fruit smoothies and vegetable soups are ideal. Eventually, the stomach can handle meals and lean meat.

A recommended diet consists of large amounts of fresh foods from the green grocers, a few cereals, nuts and grains, a little dairy and a small portion of the good edible oil. This has been taught in western countries since the last century and is still good advice today. Although, today’s problems have grown out of over indulgence in eating the wrong types of food the practice of including a cleansing diet into people’s life will aid longevity.

They say the most content people in life are healthy and happy and there is no evidence to say that religion or any spiritual discipline is the cause of contentment. However, it is demonstrated in the physical vigor of the people that use fasting and a body cleanse that it makes for a rejuvenated individual. Try a body cleanse detox and start revamp your body.
