What Contributes to Depression in Women

According to a recent study in the U.S., women are twice as likely to develop depression in their life compared to men. Although, the statistics of suicidal deaths occurs mostly in men, it is still important to understand what causes depression in women as they are increasing in numbers and are becoming prevalent in women these days.
Hormonal imbalance- Hormonal imbalances especially during menstrual cycle, after pregnancy and delivery, and menopausal has been attributed to the development of depression in women. Social causes like financial difficulties, stress, and relationship conflicts were also some of the factors considered.
On the other hand, Insomnia has always been linked to depression. Evidence has long existed that extended wakefulness improves the functioning of the serotonin neurotransmitter system, one of the brain-chemical systems that goes together with depression. It may also trigger the release of dopamine, a neurotransmitter linked to the development of depression.

• Change in Appetite
• Suicidal thoughts
